The day the bodies of decapitated young women begin to appear on the Californian coast, Charlie Morell, an American-Cuban lawyer and hero of the Massacre of the Saints, finds himself once again confronted with his old nightmares. Santeria, the Cuban version of voodoo, bursts back into his life, bringing with it a string of ritual murders, corrupt politicians and ghosts straight out of his tortured soul as a Cuban émigré. But this time, all the evidence points to Morell. A renowned lawyer, he suddenly finds himself in the dock, and only Rita Carr, a spirited lawyer of Mexican origin, agrees to help him. The investigation and trial will plunge Morell and Rita into the depths of darkness. The past resurfaces, and with it the most intimate secrets, those occult and terribly persistent ones that continue to make Santeria an inexpugnable part of Cuban history.
