Description

This book invites the reader to discover the history of silk, not only the classic story of silk produced from the thread of the mulberry bombyx, but also the story of a silk produced by other wild species of butterfly. It also provides an opportunity to discover the biological diversity of nature through these remarkable species, some of which have been selected for their ability to produce a strong and pleasing fibre that will be used by people in many parts of the world. This journey to the sources of silk is based on the rich collection of insects and samples kept in the reserves of the Musée des Confluences and entrusted by numerous private collectors or institutions, such as the collection of the Laboratoire de la Condition des Soies.
