African identities are often more complex than they first appear. Tribes often live side by side for centuries, sharing not only resources and land but also their origins. It takes an architectural approach to suggest that our different cultures and tribes are the building blocks of our identity, in an ever-changing, fast-paced world. It was important that the design speak to the contemporary African dynamism of these cultures and how they are represented in the 21st century. With this in mind, the design presents a fast-paced, dynamic architectural motif that is composed of many facets and presents many points of view.
Here, the circle becomes a symbol of community and wholeness, while certain shapes, such as reflected triangles, are inspired by the Ndebele tribe, and triangles and squares become a reference to Xhosa culture.
