Le statut des femmes dans le vodou en Haïti
Zombies the origins
Description
A unique subject. Many photo books explore voodoo, but this one offers a unique perspective by incorporating a sociological approach. The testimonies of voodoo priestesses provide a vivid insight into the current efforts of women in voodoo to combat gender-based violence and the dominant patriarchal power in Haiti's public sphere.
This book highlights an aspect of Haitian voodoo that has been under-studied until now: the status of women as equal to men within the cult. The originality of this situation compared to other competing religions in Haiti is illuminated in two ways: first, by recalling the struggles undertaken by women in resistance and revolt against slavery; then by exploring the relationship between the masculine and the feminine within the voodoo pantheon to reveal, at the very heart of the relationships between the deities, the effects on the imagination of the status of women and gender relations. The testimonies gathered from interviews with voodoo priestesses provide a vivid insight into the current attempts by women in voodoo to roll back gender-based violence and the dominant patriarchal power in the public sphere.
