Description

In Europe, the struggle for secularism was waged with a view to emancipating the state from religion. But in the Caribbean, the separation of the religious and political spheres is complex. Even before the state was subjugated, even before it was vassalised, it had become caught up in the discursive and imaginary apparatus of colonisation, colonialism and religious discourse, which perpetuated them by structuring mentalities and making the history of secularisation in the Caribbean arc a tortuous one.
